Introduction. Nowadays many students experience a delay in professional psychological adaptation, which is associated with underestimation of psychological and pedagogical training, as well as the peculiarities of student development and the formation of a system of value orientations. Hence the need to open and implement the internal capabilities of student youth in the direction of their successful management training arises, taking into account the specifity of the specialty.

Purpose of the article – to identify and analyse the peculiarities of images of students of economic and technical specialties concerning the requirements to the personality of the leader and self-awareness of their own management potential.

Results. It was found that economic students had a higher self-esteem, motivation and a deep level of knowledge about management as compared to students of technical specialties. They were dominated by entrepreneurial and social type of professional orientation. Students appreciated their communicative abilities above. Only a third of technical students were interested in management, positively evaluated their inclinations to work with people and saw themselves as a chief engineers. Future engineers emphasized the professional skills of the manager, the role of professional competence, responsibility of the manager, reliability in the performance of technical work. However, the underestimation of democratic approaches in managerial activities, moral and ethical qualities, showed the unformed model of management activity. Technical students were dominated by professional business orientation, rather than a deepening of reflection on the emotional states of human. Moral qualities of the manager, like humanity, politeness, empathy, were mentioned by 4% of respondents, but decency, honesty, conscientiousness were not mentioned. Hence, underestimation of the humanist orientation of the manager.

Originality. For the first time, knowledge of students of Cherkasy State Technological University about managerial potential was investigated, a comparative view towards management activity and the formation of a value system for students of economic and technical specialties was made.

Conclusion. The dominance of positive attitude towards management activity was established. The underestimation of the humanistic orientation of the personality of the leader was revealed. One third of the students of technical direction saw themselves as a leader. Almost 100% of economists were eager to realize themselves as managers, they had an entrepreneurial and social type of professional orientation. But 5% of economic students were characterized by immature forms of managerial identity, the need for dominance was more pronounced. It was proposed to include psychological disciplines to the structure of training, which would relate to the peculiarities of the specialist, and also determine the features and patterns of interpersonal professional interaction of a graduate of a technical university with other people (partners, managers, subordinates etc). Perspective and effective are training sessions for the practice in making managerial decisions
